GUATEMALA: A PRIEST ASSASSINATED IN 1983 BEATIFIED

The Guatemalan Franciscan priest Augusto Ramírez Monasterio was beatified on Saturday, November 7, in a ceremony attended by more than 10,000 faithful. Tortured and then murdered in 1983 during the civil war, he had refused to reveal the confession of a guerrilla fighter to the military authorities. His act, considered by the Church to be an act of martyrdom and fidelity to the seal of confession, earned him this religious recognition. Forty-three years after his death, his assassination remains unpunished.
