The EU is putting pressure on TikTok.

The European Commission is asking TikTok to thoroughly overhaul its recommendation algorithm, which it accuses of trapping users in spirals of repetitive videos that are potentially harmful to mental health. Brussels specifically points to content related to sadness, isolation, and body image, which is particularly dangerous for minors and vulnerable individuals. The European Union wants to give users more control over the content suggested to them and limit recommendations based on their viewing time. TikTok faces a fine of up to 6% of its global revenue if the violations of the European Digital Services Regulation are confirmed.
